Prosecutors in Michigan, Georgia and Nevada also have brought criminal charges against some of the people who signed on as fake electors in those states. A grand jury empaneled in Maricopa County, Arizona, to investigate efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state met this week before Mayes announced the charges. The fake electors for Trump convened at the state Republican Party headquarters in Phoenix on December 14, 2020. But in the weeks that followed, some of the fake electors continued to push for Pence to reject the legitimate Democratic slate of electors.

CNN —Former New York Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from the House and is facing federal charges, announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing his bid for Congress in New York’s 1st District. The future holds countless possibilities and I am ready willing and able to step up to the plate and go fight for my country at anytime,” Santos said. The announcement comes roughly a month after Santos said he was leaving the Republican Party and would make his congressional comeback bid as an independent. ☆ Alaska Airlines passenger accused of trying to open cockpit door has been charged in federal court

CNN —A passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight this month repeatedly tried to open the cockpit door, prompting flight attendants to barricade the door and have the man restrained until landing, court documents filed in federal court allege. Jones got up from his seat several times during the flight and made three attempts to go to the front of the plane and open the cockpit door, an air marshal wrote in an affidavit. When a flight attendant asked why he tried to access the cockpit, Jones replied that he “was testing them,” the affidavit reads. The cockpit was locked down and barricaded with a beverage cart for the remainder of the flight, according to the affidavit. The passenger had tried to access the cockpit in a “nonviolent manner” and “appeared confused,” Alaska Airlines said on Wednesday.

CNN —A man set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, on Sunday, according to a statement from the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. The adult male was transported by DC Fire and EMS to a local hospital and remains in critical condition, MPD said. By the time firefighters were dispatched to the scene, the fire had already been extinguished by US Secret Service, according to Vito Maggiolo, a public information officer from DC Fire. MPD is working with the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to investigate the incident. CNN —The National Archives in Washington, DC, closed early on Wednesday after two people dumped red powder on the display that protects the US Constitution, Archives officials said in a news release. “The Constitution was unaffected in its encasement. The individuals were immediately detained by security at the time of the incident, around 2:30 p.m., and officials are investigating, the Archives said. The National Archives Rotunda will remain closed for cleaning Thursday, the Archives said, but the rest of the National Archives Building will be open on its regular schedule. The Constitution is on permanent display as part of the “Charters of Freedom” exhibit showing the United States’ founding documents, along with the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights.

CNN —A former Trump administration official who was shot in a deadly string of carjackings in Washington, DC, earlier last week died Saturday, the DC Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement. Michael Gill, 56, was inside his vehicle parked at Mount Vernon Square on Monday when the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham, got inside the vehicle and shot him, police said. Cunningham shot Vasquez dead and fled the scene in his vehicle before officials say he conducted two more carjacking incidents in Prince George’s County the following morning, MPD Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll said at a Tuesday news conference. Cunningham was eventually stopped and was fatally shot by two New Carrollton police officers in Maryland on Tuesday. Before his death, Michael Gill worked for the Housing Policy Council, a real estate trade association, for several years, the organization’s president, Ed DeMarco, confirmed in a statement.

CNN —US Capitol Police said it investigated more than 8,000 threats against members of Congress last year – an increase of about 500 cases from the previous year, according to data released Thursday by the department. In 2023, the USCP’s Threat Assessment Section investigated 8,008 cases, Capitol Police said, an increase from the previous year’s 2022 assessment of 7,501 threats against lawmakers. The 2023 cases include investigations into concerning statements and direct threats, according to a release from Capitol Police. CNN —An Alaska man was arrested on Monday after allegedly sending a threatening message to a US senator, writing that he planned to hunt down and physically harm the senator, according to court documents. Arther Charles Graham is charged with making interstate threats to kidnap and injure a current US senator, according to a statement from the Department of Justice. Court documents do not identify the senator, only referring to “she” and “her.” Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski is the only current female Alaska senator. Graham wrote that he was facing eviction and said that he had “nowhere else to live,” according to court documents. US Capitol Police are investigating with the FBI Anchorage Field Office, Kenai Police Department and Alaska State Troopers, according to the Justice Department.

Jonathan J. Dunn was indicted by a Utah grand jury on October 18 and charged with interference with a flight crew, stemming from an August 2022 incident, according to court documents. Dunn was authorized to carry a gun on board the plane due to the Transportation Security Administration’s Federal Flight Deck Officer program, the Inspector General’s office said. The Federal Flight Deck Officer program was developed in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks and involves training and arming pilots to handle an in-flight attack, such as a hijacking attempt. “Upon successful completion, the pilot is deputized as a federal law enforcement officer and issued a TSA-approved firearm and federal flight deck officer credentials,” the Transportation Security Administration said. Pilots, flight engineers and flight navigators who meet certain requirements are eligible for the program, according to the agency.

Hong Kong CNN —Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo says the US government has no evidence that Huawei can produce smartphones with advanced chips “at scale,” as it continues to investigate how the sanctioned Chinese manufacturer made an apparent breakthrough with its latest flagship device. On Tuesday, Raimondo told US lawmakers that she was “upset” by news of the launch of Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro during her visit to China last month. “The only good news, if there is any, is we don’t have any evidence that they can manufacture 7-nanometer [chips] at scale,” she told a US House of Representatives hearing. That surprised many because SMIC, a partially state-owned Chinese company, has also been subject to US export restrictions for years.
